Wearables and the City

Advanced Digital Media Seminar – Spring 2018

wear·a·ble

adjective

  1. (especially of clothing) easy to wear; suitable for wearing.

– denoting or relating to a computer or other electronic device that is small or light enough to be worn or carried on one’s body.

smart cit·y

noun

  1. An urban development vision to integrate information and communication technology (ICT) and Internet of things (IoT) technology in a secure fashion to manage a city’s assets.

Students were asked to design and craft a digitally fabricated ‘wearable’ and then proliferate its impact on an urban scale. Students started the semester researching wearable technologies and advancing their skills in digital fabrication and parametric design. Through iterative design, students fabricated a prototype of a wearable using equipment available in the Computation and Construction Lab. This prototype was submitted for potential inclusion in the ISU Fashion Show. The latter part of the semester engaged the city, investigating the scalar shift between the human body and the urban environment.  After a selection of curated readings and reflections, students created a series of network studies and diagrams, illustrating the wearable’s impact on and integration into the smart city, cumulating in a short movie.
