DESI 511: DIGITAL FABRICATION STUDIO – Fall 2014
This project challenges the intended usage of a product and investigates its usability by adding 3D printed parts to the ready-made products. The concept of a 3D printer as a new product generator in a business setting is emerging as a very viable resource. However, the way these machines will be utilized and implement is still unknown; print times are long, and machines may never have the ability to print complex and sophisticated forms, such as a pair of sneakers. For now, we will treat the now and future as a place where mass-produced products and 3D printed parts can be mashed up to create/customize/transform. The challenge is to take these ubiquitous or culturally divergent objects and re-imagine their aesthetic and function, elevating them to the realms of extraordinary. From this perspective, the products in stores are not so much completed product by semi-finished product. In other words, the ready-made object becomes a material for new creation, which generates possibilities for new products.
