Public Workshop – Fall 2017
We were awarded a 2017 ISU Women’s and Diversity grant (recently renamed the Inclusion Initiatives Grant Program) for: “Cyborg Sessions: Women in Robotics Workshop” a free six-part workshop introducing robotic drawing to 20 students across design disciplines. Students who identify as female were given registration priority but all students are welcome.
The aim of this ongoing workshop is to introduce students to the concepts and methodologies necessary to begin to build their own desktop robots. No prior engineering experience is necessary, only a willingness to experiment and learn. Students are introduced to a small ‘turtle’ robot to introduce drawing and then an Arduino Braccio Arm to learn how to paint with the robotic arm. The workshop culminates in mid-October with a keynote by roboticist Madeline Gannon who will talk about her work in robotics and empathy.
